Domestic Urea Output to Cover 35% of Brazil Fertilizer Needs by 2026
The Minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, stated on Tuesday (July 22) that within two years, Petrobras will produce 35% of the nitrogen fertilizers used by Brazilian farmers in their crops.
Speaking to the press after a meeting of Confert (the National Council on Fertilizers and Plant Nutrition), he said that Brazil will still depend on fertilizer imports, but that domestic production represents progress in terms of food “sovereignty.”
“Petrobras, in the next two years, will supply 35% of the fertilizer used in Brazilian agriculture, which is currently fully imported,” he said. According to Teixeira, the company’s president, Magda Chambriard, recently presented the government with a production schedule for urea in 2025 and 2026, which includes the reactivation of nitrogen fertilizer plants in Bahia, Sergipe, Paraná, and Mato Grosso do Sul.
Teixeira noted that Brazil has faced difficulties importing fertilizers amid global trade tensions and wars, such as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He added that Donald Trump’s new tariff measures also pose challenges, though he said the issue was not discussed during the Confert meeting, which Vice President Geraldo Alckmin attended.
“We still face challenges in importing inputs and must remain attentive. Today’s meeting was a hopeful one, given that Brazil now has a clearer path toward achieving autonomy in fertilizer production,” he told reporters. – Source: datamarnews.com –
